The program for this exercise was to storyboard a scene for a
forthcoming Star Trek movie, in which Kirk and Spock emerge into the
valley of Shangri-La: rank on rank of gorgeous buildings overwhelm
with beauty and majesty. We had six hours for design and execution.
I chose to render the image in charcoal because I'd been working with
it a lot and knew I could work quickly. There was little design here,
I just started with the general landscape and started adding buildings,
using forms and motifs from Chinese historical and religious
architecture. I'm really happy with the way it came out, although the
professor found it too bucolic and not urban enough.
